Tip #4 QR Codes: The Key to Awesomeness!

Hello Colleagues,

QR Codes have become the 'hot ticket' lately in so many ways.  This summer it seemed every day I found a new way to use QR codes.  Here is s quick video that gives you an overview of how they are being used in groceries, advertising, movie trailers and so much more.

For those of you who chose not to check out the above video, here is a super short explanation of what a QR Code is.  Basically it is like a bar code.  It is a graphic design that is read by a scanner (most often on a tablet or phone) that takes you to a 'destination' on the web.  The destination can be a website, a movie trailer, a coupon, a resume and much more.

How can these be used in the classroom?  One of my absolute favorites is to add an extra dimension to a 'static display.'  For example, imagine you have your class' poetry hung outside your classroom.  An observer can 'see' the poetry, but imagine having a QR Code next to the piece of poetry.  When an observer scans the QR Code, it could go to a website that has the child reading their own poem aloud.  Or, imagine an art display.  If you scan the QR Code, you could have students narrate each piece or give you background on what the students were thinking about as they created the piece.  There is no end to how you could use QR Codes in your teaching.

The video shared above gives several options for creating QR Codes.  Here is one of the simplest ways to create QR Codes that feature an audio recording.  It uses a website called RecordMP3.org.  It is a free website that just takes a couple of clicks to access.

1.Go to: recordmp3.org
Note - The first time you use this site, you will need to click a couple of buttons to set it up. Just follow the on-screen directions.
2.Record the audio.
3.Click the “Save Recording” button.
4.
Copy the provided URL. and you have an augmented reality QR Code.  Just print it and post it!
